How to Equip a Trailer-Sailer for Ocean Sailing

"I want a boat that can cross the North Atlantic," Bill Trescott said.  "Her mast must fold instantly when underway to clear a nine foot bridge, she can draw no more than two and a half feet of water, and I don't want a centerboard."

"Impossible," the broker said. "Can I interest you in a sportsfisherman with twin V-6's?"  "I go sailing to relax, not to disturb others," said Bill.

Fortunately, Bill arranged a power lunch with Peter Claussen, who was trying to revive the Seaforth, a 20 ½ foot coastal cruiser modified to increase collision resistance and safely sail in Texas bays. On a napkin at T-bone Tom's in Kemah, Bill drew what he wanted and Peter said, "We'll have the plans for your approval in two weeks."

On the maiden voyage "Treasure of Pleasure" was side-swiped by a 200' barge, knocking Bill out of bed, but causing only superficial scratches. Bill has now crossed the gulf of Mexico four times - 750 miles each way and has sailed every bay from Key West to Brownsville. He now advises other intrepid sailors who welcome the challenge and convenience of going to sea in a small boat.
